Established in 1832, William Smith & Sons are a family run business that specialises in the manufacture of sign and graphic artwork. Based in CountyDurham, their major trading partners include County, Borough and District Councils as well as other companies within their industry nationwide.

The business has grown steadily over the years, and now employs over 70 people. As one of the first sign manufacturing companies in the country to attain the Quality Assurance standard BS5750, updated to ISO 9002 and recently to ISO 9001:2000, William Smith has always held the quality of the product and the service offered to be of paramount importance. Over the past 85 years the name of William Smith has become synonymous with the production of quality signage and graphics, offering a diverse product range, and a material distribution service that is second to none.

William Smith & Sons use AzTech BACS-IP integrated with Sage Payroll. We spoke to Neil Harrington, the Office & Admin Manager of W M Smith & Sons to ask him how integrating his Sage Payroll and AzTech BACS-IP Software has helped his business:

Q) What originally made you choose AzTech BACS-IP?

Before we used a modem to access BACS-IP, we used to create BACS diskettes and carry them round to our local Bank branch for onward processing!” continued Neil. “When time came to get away from diskettes we chose InterSoftware to provide us with their AzTech BACS 32 solution mainly due to their reputation for excellent customer service.

W M Smith & Sons had the DOS version of AzTech BACS 32 installed over ten years ago, and have since migrated to the Windows version, and recently to AzTech BACS-IP. Not only has AzTech BACS-IP provided us with a safe and reliable solution, but InterSoftware has supplied us with updated versions of the product to keep us in line with the advances in Windows operating systems, as well as the recent upgrade to BACSTEL-IP. InterSoftware’s engineers handled these upgrades in an efficient and expert fashion, leading to a smooth transition without any negative impact on our business.

Q) What benefits have you seen to your business from using AzTech BACS-IP and Sage in conjunction?

A) We use Sage Payroll and AzTech BACS-IP to manage our staff payroll. We needed a reliable and robust solution for our internal payroll and Sage Payroll and AzTech BACS-IP provides exactly what we where looking for.

When it came time to choose an accounting and payroll system, it was imperative that it interfaced seamlessly with our bespoke ordering system developed for us by Quest. Sage was the obvious choice for us, as not only does it fulfil all our requirement for such a system, but it shares a programming language with our ordering system. Because AzTech BACS can import the data directly from Sage, it means all our systems are fully integrated. This enables us to import data from one system to the other without the need for re-keying.
